Frederik Buyckx
Pay tribute to a famous photographer, that’s what this project is all about. As I am inspired by the Belgian photographer Frederik Buyckx, I chose his work, and his series Horse Head in particular, as a starting point for this series of photos.
The series of Frederik Buyckx tells the story of semi-nomadic sheperds in Kyrgyzstan. How humans and animals live together and how they are interdependent. The forces of the elements are brutal, isolation is a crucial factor.
The vast landscapes of Kyrgyzstan were out of my reach and nothing similar was to be found in Belgium. But there are a few sheperds working in Belgium. So I contacted Patrick, a sheperd who works near Aarschot. Together with his dogs, he herds a flock of sheep in natural reserves in the area.
Patrick was so kind to let me accompany him, his dogs and his herd during an afternoon until nightfall in early February 2020. It was a wonderful experience!
