Mirror
The subject “mirror” gives a photographer many opportunities to work with. You can work with reflections, the mirrored image, … Fascinated by the Italian master Caravaggio, I wanted to do something with his painting ‘Narcissus’.
In the academy, we were exploring studio photography and discovering the possibilities of working with artificial light. With fascinating results, so I wanted to use it for this assignment too.
First of all, I wanted to reinterpret Caravaggio’s Narcissus, by the ancient myth where Narcissus falls in love with his reflection in the river, does not want to leave it and dies from exhaustion and hunger.
Another painting by Caravaggio depicts the biblical fight between David and Goliath, with the severed head from Goliath said to be the head of Caravaggio himself. I wanted to see if I could be both characters, with the use of a hand mirror and a large standing mirror.
